Voted "One of the Best" antique shops in the
greater Binghamton area, the Antique Exchange had
its beginnings as a halfway house for heirlooms almost 30 years
ago. The shop was originally associated with Roberson Museum and
opened in September of 1977. The founding owners managed the Antique
Exchange part-time for two years with all profits benefiting the
museum.
The Antique Exchange was modeled on the
Woman's Exchange that began its life in New York City in 1919 as
a place where "distressed ladies" could discretely sell
their heirlooms for needed cash. As consignment volume grew, the
founders incorporated the Antique Exchange in 1979
and began to manage it as a corporate entity. It has been in continuous
operation as an antique and collectibles consignment shop for 28
years.
The Antique Exchange recently moved to the historic
circa 1858 Moses Stoppard House at 51 Front Street after 27 years
at its museum location. Presently the Exchange has six rooms containing
over 10,000 privately consigned items for sale.
